to-the-point: SolarCity expands to Florida

SolarCity, which just recently became a wholly-owned unit of Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), announced on Thursday that it will start offering its residential solar service in the state of Florida.

The company explained that this expansion into a new market was made possible last month, when voters in Florida rejected the Amendment 1, a solar ballot initiative backed by local utilities that would have made it more costly for homeowners to install solar panels on their roofs.

At first, SolarCity will serve customers of Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) and Orlando Utilities Commission in the greater Orlando area from a local installation centre in Clermont, it said. The company, though, plans to expand to more areas in the coming months.
