April 6 (SeeNews) - The government of Senegal will this year to launch a Request for Proposal (RfP) for a 50-MW solar park project, according to secretary of energy Mouhamadou Thiam.
The planned photovoltaic (PV) facility will generate electricity for Senegal’s national electricity company Senelec, which will buy the output under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), Thiam said at a workshop of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, as cited by local news agency Agence Ecofin on Monday. Work on the project is planned to commence this year.
In January, Senelec started building a 15-MW solar plant in Niakhar, western Senegal, under a government plan aimed at improving the social and economic development of Senegal by 2035.
The African country aims to generate 20% of its total power from renewables by 2017.
