Oct 8, 2012 - India’s Tihar Jain has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to install at the facility biogas plant to process kitchen waste, the Times of India said Monday.
The newspaper quoted jail officials as saying that the plant would be located in sub-jail number 2 and will have the capacity to convert one tonne of biodegradable food waste per day into biogas and manure. The biogas will be used to produce electricity.
Under the terms of the agreement, BARC will be the owner of all scientific data gathered during the operation and maintenance of the plant.
The plant will be built by an agency authorised by BARC and under the centre’s technical guidance. The same agency will run the plant, while BARC will provide technical advice during construction, installation, operation and maintenance of the plant.
The jail authorities will pay INR 1.2 million (USD 23,000/EUR 18,000) for the construction of the plant and will pay a quarterly maintenance fee of INR 300,000 to the agency.
Times of India also quoted a spokesman for the jail as saying that the jail authorities were in talks with the ministry of new and renewable energy to build a solar plant at the facility as well. The spokesman said that the solar power project could cut the jail’s electricity bill by INR 10 million a year.
