February 12 (Renewables Now) - Swiss utility Elektrizitaetswerke des Kantons Zurich (EKZ) held a sod-turning ceremony on Tuesday at the site of its 49.08-MW Algibicos solar photovoltaic (PV) project in the Spanish region of Murcia, local news service La Opinion de Murcia reported today.

According to the report, the project will involve an investment of around EUR 40 million (USD 43.6m).

The ceremony unveiled the first of 130,000 solar panels that will be installed to generate enough electricity to power up more than 20,000 households. The construction site occupies an almost flat area in the district of Banos y Mendigo located near the region’s capital Murcia, the news report states.

The Algibicos solar park will operate without any subsidies, EKZ said last November when it acquired the project from Swiss green power producer Aventron AG. The facility’s entire output will be sold on the market.

EKZ then estimated, and the local report confirmed, that Algibicos would commence commercial operations in the final quarter of 2020.
