Sunfire GmbH announced today it will build a 500-MW alkaline electrolyser production site in Germany by 2023, thus increasing its existing annual production capacity of 40 MW more than tenfold.
"Ambitious regulatory initiatives to cut CO2 emissions in all sectors of the economy are fostering a rapid growth of the global hydrogen market until 2030. Hence, we are already planning a further scaling to more than 1 GW/year,” stated Sunfire CEO Nils Aldag.
In a statement, the company noted that the final investment decision will be made upon completion of site selection and that the decision is based on its ability to secure the needed financing.
Sunfire added pressurised alkaline electrolysis to its product portfolio in January 2021, when it acquired Swiss firm Industrie Haute Technology SA (IHT). The German company also makes solid oxide (SOEC) electrolysers and it expects this technology to be the preferred choice in various industries, but for now, it needs further development at full speed, Sunfire explained.
"In order to satisfy the large demand of our customers already today, we will be expanding our production capacity for alkaline electrolysis," Aldag said, adding that the company is ready for hydrogen projects in the 100 MW scale.
