US renewables developer SunEdison Inc (NYSE:SUNE) said on Monday it has won five additional solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in South Africa with a combined capacity of 371 MW in direct current (DC).
The projects were awarded to SunEdison in the fourth bid round of South Africa’s Renewable Energy IPP Procurement (REIPPP) programme. This announcement is made a month after the company unveiled it won an 86-MW solar project in South Africa’s Northern Cape province under the same round.
The five new projects will be located in the Northern Cape and North West provinces. Together, the plants will be able to generate enough electricity to cover the annual consumption of over 200,000 local homes. The output will be sold to national utility Eskom under 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs).
In addition to building the solar parks, the US company will also operate and maintain them through its subsidiary SunEdison Services.
Since 2011, when SunEdison entered the South African market, the company has developed, constructed and still operates 130 MW of utility-scale solar farms there.
