February 14 (Renewables Now) - Norwegian state-owned utility Statkraft AS and Denmark-based green energy supplier Everfuel Europe A/S have joined the Nordic Hydrogen Corridor (NHC) initiative that looks to provide hydrogen road transport in Sweden.

The initiative, managed by Hydrogen Sweden, already has carmakers Hyundai Motor Company (KRX:005380) and Toyota Motor Corp (TYO:7203) as partners. The initiative will include the provision of vehicles as well as hydrogen production and distribution. The hydrogen will be produced from renewable energy in the Scandinavian countries.

About 40 cities and municipalities in Sweden have expressed desire for hydrogen-based transport. The partners are now working to make sure there is enough demand in the most promising locations before the initiative enters the execution phase. The initiative will then have a budget of EUR 20 million (USD 22m), to be co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility.
