Southwest Public Power Agency Inc (SPPA) said on Tuesday it has contracted power supplies from 300 MW of solar and 600 MWh of battery storage capacity, representing the largest renewable power purchase in the operational history of the agency.
Specifically, SPPA has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a joint venture between BrightNight and Cordelio Power that owns the Box Canyon project located in Pinal County, Arizona.
The contracted electricity volume will be supplied to 21 of SPPA’s constituent members. SPPA estimates that the Box Canyon facility will meet about a third of its peak capacity needs and 19% to 21% of its energy needs.
The project has recently reached all major permitting milestones and is seen to start operation in 2025. It will create over 200 construction and five permanent O&M jobs.
