Spanish beer and beverages producer Mahou San Miguel has commissioned a 5-MWp solar self-consumption system at its production facility in Alovera, central Spain, the brewer said on Wednesday.
The project represented an investment of EUR 3 million (USD 3m). It involved covering a surface of 55,000 square metres (592,015 sq ft) with solar panels, which were placed at the factory entrance and the roofs, Mahou San Miguel said.
The solar power system is expected to generate of 7,500 MWh per year, without injecting surplus to the grid. This is enough to enable the Alovera factory meet 16% of its power consumption needs, or as Mahou San Miguel puts it, almost two out of ten beer bottles will be produced with clean electricity.
