East Energy, utility to use green H2 to decarbonise district heating in Brandenburg
Jul 01, 2022 15:43 CESTMay 3 (Renewables Now) - Spanish natural gas distributor Nortegas on Monday launched the H2SAREA demonstration project to study the impact of hydrogen blending on gas infrastructure and equipment as it increases the proportion of hydrogen in the mixture.
H2SAREA is the first hydrogen blending initiative in Spain, according to Nortegas. The company did not say what ratio of hydrogen to natural gas would be used for this project.
Nortegas, which bills itself as the second largest gas distributor in Spain, operates a 8,500 kilometre (5,282 miles) long network and conducts business in Spain’s northern regions - the Basque Country, Asturias and Cantabria.
The Basque Country government supported the H2SAREA project through a dedicated research and development programme. Other Basque Country-based businesses, such as ABC Compresores, CAE SL, FIDEGAS, H2Site, Erreka Fastening Solutions and Orkli, collaborated with Nortegas on the demonstration as part of a consortium.
Nortegas said that it is working on research and development of new materials and components that would be suitable for injections of 100% hydrogen.
