Spain's GRS part of EPC consortium for 55-MW PV plant in S Africa

Spanish construction company GRS said construction planning has started for a 62.24-MWp/55-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.

The company, Spanish partner TSK and South African company Umbono Energy have been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM). The latter recently acquired a 50.01% interest in the project through its unit IDEAS Managed Fund.

Named Greefspan II, the solar facility is to break ground in September 2019 and start commercial operations in November 2020. When completed, the PV park is expected to generate enough power to meet the annual demand of approximately 20,000 homes and offset more than 130,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

The project was awarded under Round 4 of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

GRS has successfully completed the construction of two other PV plants in the country, the Lesedi and Letsatsi farms, each of 75 MW, it noted.
