Jun 24, 2014 - US utility Southern California Edison (SCE), part of Edison International (NYSE:EIX), on Monday unveiled a new round of solicitations for 290 MW of small-scale renewable energy projects.
The schemes can include solar, wind, geothermal and biomass and will be procured through a renewable auction mechanism (RAM). SCE targets projects with capacities of between 3 MW and 20 MW. This is the fifth request for offers the company launches.
The submission deadline for the solicitation is June 27.
SCE has contracted 530 MW of renewable power through four previous auctions, it noted. At present, about 22% of the firm’s power mix is sourced from renewables, while total share of renewables in California’s power is 15%. In 2013, SCE supplied 1,037 GWh of solar power to its clients, which was enough to meet the demand of 98,358 households.
The California Public Utilities Commission adopted RAM in December 2010, seeking to reduce transaction costs and encourage the development of small-scale renewable distributed generation. It focuses on projects which can use existing transmission and distribution lines, promote competition, do not burden customers and help California achieve its renewables goal of 33% by 2020.
