Spanish cooperative Som Energia inaugurated a 2-MW solar plant built in Seville province on Wednesday.
With more than 1,700 contributors, the Alcolea del Rio plant secured about EUR 2 million (USD 2.2m) of investments. The solar plant is part of a community renewable energy initiative launched back in 2015 by the cooperative.
The photovoltaic (PV) facility is expected to have an annual production of 3 million kWh, equivalent to the consumption of approximately 1,300 households. It can also offset about 1,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, said Som Energia.
This is the first of three renewable energy projects that Som Energia has planned. The second project, a wind farm near Barcelona, has just received official authorisation to begin construction. The total investment for the three schemes is EUR 5 million.
