July 11 (Renewables Now) - Paolo Topic, a bulk carrier managed by Marfin Management SAM, is going solar with the help of flexible photovoltaic (PV) panel maker Solbian Energie Alternative Srl.

Marfin and Solbian, with the support of Italian solar plants specialist TGE Srl, have launched this project to assess solar power generation on the vessel, which relies only on diesel generators for power. The addition of PV capacity can significantly reduce fuel consumption and maintenance costs while improving the environmental performance of Paolo Topic, Solbian said in a press release earlier this week. There are plans for "a future integration of solar with the hybridization of the three diesel genset".

Installing the PV panels without creating fixed constraints to the load and unload operations was extremely important in this project. A special removable structure has been designed for the purpose.

Solbian is producing the Solbianflex panels for sailing yachts and other applications such as tents, caravans and campers, as well as building-integrated projects.
