Oct 29, 2013 - Japanese solar module maker Solar Frontier said Monday that as of end-September it had delivered 86 MW of solar panels for projects won by domestic engineering firm Chiyoda Corp (TYO:6366).
The copper indium gallium selenide (CIS) photovoltaic (PV) modules have been delivered for 18 solar parks, the construction of which has been awarded to Chiyoda, while Solar Frontier have been chosen as equipment supplier. Chiyoda has already built and put on stream five of the 18 photovoltaic (PV) facilities, while the remaining 13 are to be constructed by engineering company and its unit Chiyoda System Technologies Corp.
Solar Frontier and Chiyoda expect to collaborate on future solar projects, the solar module manufacturer said.
Solar project developers in Japan have been attracted by the ample feed-in tariffs (FiTs) for renewables that Japan launched in July 2012. Although the country approved a 10% cut in the FiT for solar electricity to JPY 37.8 (USD 0.39/EUR 0.28) per kWh as of April 1, the rate is still quite appealing when compared to other parts of the world. Yesterday, the Nikkei reported that the Japanese government plans to reduce the rate once again from next April.
