Soitec opens 280-MW solar CPV factory in San Diego
Dec 20, 2012 - French silicon-on-insulator wafers maker Soitec (EPA:SOI) said Wednesday it had opened its solar concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) manufacturing facility in San Diego, which is expected to have 280 MWp capacity at full production.
Production kicked off in October and the first production line with a capacity of 140 MWp is already operational, in line with the original schedule.
Soitec bought the manufacturing facility in December 2011 and it has so far invested over USD 150 million (EUR 113m) in the unit's upgrade.
When fully operational, the factory is expected to create 450 new jobs, including employees of a new joint venture called Reflexite Soitec Optical Technology LLC, which is focused on the development and manufacturing of silicone-on-glass (SOG) Fresnel lens plates used in Soitec's CPV modules.
