Swiss investment firm Smartenergy Group AG announced today it has secured permission to build and operate an up to 200-MWe green hydrogen production plant in Sardinia, Italy.
The H2 Porto Torres scheme has been greenlighted by the Sassari Provincial Industrial Consortium (CIPSS). The permit from the regional body clears the development, construction and operation of a facility with a capacity of between 20 MWe and 200 MWe.
Smartenergy will proceed with the permitting process in the first half of next year.
Under the plan, the target capacity will be installed in three phases, expected to be completed between 2026 and 2030. To be located in Sardinia’s Porto Torres district in the Province of Sassari, the complex will be built within an existing industrial base to produce “a blend of green hydrogen” for hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy-duty transport, including shipping and aviation.
Electricity for the H2 Porto Torres plant will be sourced from existing and under-development renewable energy projects with an estimated capacity of up to 500 MWp.
The execution of the project aligns with Smartenergy’s investment strategy, the Swiss firm noted. It initiated feasibility studies on the scheme last year.
