Singapore allocates USD 11m for solar research

Jul 25, 2014 - The government of Singapore has awarded up to SGD 14 million (USD 11.3m/EUR 8.4m) in grants to five entities that will conduct research aimed at cutting solar equipment production costs.

The Economic Development Board (EDB) said on Friday that the financing was provided under the third grant call of the country’s Energy Innovation Research Programme (EIRP). That round is focused on improvements in the processes for the production of solar wafers, cells and modules. Its goal is also to support innovations in materials used in the manufacturing process.

Two of the winning projects are run by the National University of Singapore, while the Singapore University of Technology & Design and the Nanyang Technological University each have one winning proposal. A project of Singapore-based wafer, cell and panel maker REC Solar ASA (OSL:RECSOL) will also receive some of the financing.
