Swedish electro-fuels company Liquid Wind today announced an equity investment by Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR) and said it will use a 70-MW PEM electroliser by the latter in its projects.
Liquid Wind has been created to develop, finance, build and manage commercial-scale eMethanol facilities. It aims to develop up to 500 standardised units globally by 2050.
The company has been collaborating with Siemens for five years already and now, as part of the expanded partnership, it will make use of the German power engineering major’s technology and expertise in the development of eMethanol facilities.
The Siemens electrolyser will produce green hydrogen which will then be combined with biogenic carbon dioxide to make a carbon-neutral liquid fuel for the shipping industry. Siemens Energy will also supply the power distribution, electrification, instrumentation, motors, drives and plant-wide automation.
“eMethanol will be one of the drivers in the future of transportation and Siemens Energy want to be an active part of this,” said Siemens' Principle Corporate Account Manager Engelbert Schrapp.
The construction time of an eMethanol facility is about two years. Liquid Wind expects the solution to be available from late 2023 or early 2024.
