The Scottish government on Monday launched a consultation on changes that could allow larger solar arrays to be installed on non-domestic properties without a planning application.
The government is proposing to amend some of the existing permitted development rights, including removing the microgeneration output thresholds of 50 kW for electricity and 45 kW for thermal. The proposal applies to solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal equipment.
The move follows the easing of planning rules in England for solar installations on commercial buildings of up to 1 MW. Scotland sets no limit to the size of the system.
"We are delighted that, so soon after our engagement with the Scottish Government, Scotland is not just going to equal but go further than England on permitted development for solar," said the Solar Trade Association Scotland chairman John Forster. The proposal would help fulfill Scotland's solar potential and its 100% renewables target and would make it easier for Scottish businesses to cut their energy bills by fitting solar panels on their roofs, added Forster.
The Scottish government is seeking responses to the consultation by August 27.
