Schneider Electric to install microgrid at Long Beach port

October 12 (Renewables Now) - French energy management expert Schneider Electric SE (EPA:SU) announced on Wednesday it will design, engineer and build a new microgrid to enable critical energy resilience at the Port of Long Beach in California.

Schneider Electric's contract with the Port totalling USD 5.2 million (EUR 4.48m) is part of a USD-7.1-million (EUR 6.12m) project, partially funded by a USD-5-million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC).

The company will create a microgrid technology demonstration, including an integrated system of distributed energy resources (DER) and microgrid controls that are seen to raise renewable energy production. The microgrid installation will bolster energy resilience and ensure business continuity at all of the marine terminals.

The project also involves installing a 300-kW array photovoltaic (PV) system for energy production, integrating a 250-kW microgrid-extending mobile battery energy, a 500-kW diesel generator and additional microgrid controls allowing demand response, peak shaving, and islanded operations for energy resilience, the company said. As part of the project, the Energy Control Center will also utilise 330-kW/670-kWh stationary battery energy storage.

During the microgrid installation, Schneider Electric will collaborate with the Port of Long Beach in the compilation and analysis of 12 months of performance data to make sure that the microgrid is effectively helping the port achieve its energy resilience objectives, the announcement says.
