Scatec Solar, IFC plan series of 10-MW solar parks in Africa

(SeeNews) - Jun 11, 2012 - Norwegian photovoltaic (PV) solutions provider Scatec Solar said today planned to develop a number of 10-MW solar power plants in West and Central Africa together with the World Bank's International Finance Corp.

Scatec and global infrastructure project development fund IFC InfraVentures will collaborate on the development, design, financing, construction and operations of photovoltaic (PV) plants throughout the region. The first projects are planned for Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Niger and Togo.

Africa's rapid economic growth has led to a surge in power demand, yet there is a lack of infrastructure in many regions. Scatec said that solar power could become an efficient alternative to thermal generation and added that PV systems are also well-suited for remote areas where they can help enhance rural electricity access.
