Nov 28, 2011 - Brazil's state-run energy research company EPE excluded the Sao Manoel hydroelectric power plant (HPP) from the A-5 energy auction as the required public hearings for environmental licensing were cancelled, EPE's president Mauricio Tolmasquim said on Friday.
As regards to the 400 MW Sinop HPP, EPE's head expressed hope that it will be able to get an environmental licence although the deadline for it expires December 1.
The participation of gas-fired thermoelectric power plants (TPPs) in the auction was also dropped out since Brazil's state-owned oil and gas giant Petrobras (SAO:PETR3, NYSE:PBR) declared it is not able to guarantee the gas supply for them. Hence, the auction will focus on wind power and biomass thermal power projects.
Tolmasquim confirmed the participation of the Baixo Parnaiba hydroelectric complex, comprising the plants Castelhano, Cachoeira and Estreito.
The tender scheduled for December 20, will offer 30-year contracts for the sale of hydropower and 20-year contracts for other energy sources, with supplies to start in January 2016.
