S Korea to back Uzbekistan’s solar efforts

Dec 20, 2013 - The governments of South Korea and Uzbekistan have sealed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together to identify the best locations for solar parks in Uzbekistan.

The move is part of South Korea’s plan to back the development of solar power schemes in Uzbekistan and provide technological assistance то the projects, the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Thursday. It also comes in line with Uzbekistan’s plans to start building a 100-MW solar plant in Samarkand for a cost of USD 200 million (EUR 146.6m).

The agreement is expected to enhance the relationship between the two countries and open new opportunities for South Korean companies willing to participate in Uzbekistan’s solar market, according to the statement.

Uzbekistan aims to install 4,000 MW of solar power capacity by 2030, investing more than USD 11 billion in the initiative.
