German energy major RWE AG (ETR:RWE) today said it has acquired Polish photovoltaic (PV) project developer Alpha Solar, together with its project pipeline of roughly 3 GW.
The purchase, the value of which was kept under wraps, further extends the German group’s operations within the European renewable energy industry and boosts its global solar development pipeline to 10 GW.
“This acquisition represents an excellent opportunity for RWE to diversify our global solar footprint, while further enhancing our local capabilities and renewables project pipeline in Poland. The country offers good locations for solar plants,” said Katja Wunschel, CEO Onshore Wind and PV Europe & Australia, RWE Renewables.
Warsaw-based Alpha Solar was set up in 2019 to provide comprehensive services in the solar development field. The company's offering includes location selection, land acquisition, project design, permitting and execution.
The pipeline that RWE takes over includes early phase identified opportunities and shovel-ready projects spread across Poland. The majority of these are utility-scale schemes in various stages of development.
RWE will acquire the business together with a team of around 60 staff. They will join the German company and will work both on the existing pipeline and new projects, the buyer said.
In Poland, RWE plans to build around 70 MW of new solar parks in 2022 and 2023, in addition to the capacity in Alpha Solar’s pipeline.
