March 19 (Renewables Now) - Renewables generated 42.8% of Spain’s electricity in February and 42.2% during the first two months of 2020, according to the latest estimates provided by Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE).
With an output of 4,267 GWh, up by 15.5% year-on-year, wind was the top producer of electricity among renewable energy technologies in February, and the second behind nuclear power.

The nation’s demand for power declined by 1.5% year-on-year to an estimated 20,961 GWh in February.
In January through February, demand was lower by 2.3% compared to the same months in 2019 and reached 44,771 GWh.
Figures for Spain’s mainland also show a drop in demand -- by 1.7% to 19,820 GWh in February, and by 2.5% to 42,383 GWh in the first two months of the year.
In February alone, renewables generated 44.5% of all power in the mainland. Wind power production rose by 14.4% year-on-year to 4,174 GWh, representing a share of 21.6%.
In the Balearic Islands, demand in February was estimated at 403,352 MWh, down by 2.9% year-on-year. In January through February, demand went down by 3.7% to 859,813 MWh.
The biggest producers were combined-cycle power plants which were behind 78.4% of electricity in the Balearic system. Coal-based power did not contribute a single MWh for the second consecutive month in 2020, REE noted.
In the Canary Islands, demand rose by 4% to 705,667 MWh in February. When January and February are taken together, the figures show a 1.9% increase in demand to an estimate 1,461,361 MWh.
Combined-cycle power plants were behind 39.5% of all electricity generated on the islands, while renewables and emission-free technologies took a 16.4% share in the mix.
