Reading Council protests against UK plans for FiT cuts
(SeeNews) – Nov 28, 2011 – The chorus of discontent against the UK government's plans to slash feed-in tariffs (FiT) for solar panels has grown as Jo Lovelock, head of Reading Borough Council, has written to the prime minister, voicing her concerns over the plans, Reading Post newspaper said today.
In her letter to David Cameron, Lovelock warns that the council has set aside GBP 5 million (USD 7.8m/EUR 5.8m) to fund the scheme and has committed significant sums for procurement. She argues that the planned cuts, to come into effect on December 12, bear substantial financial risks for the council.
The councillor is asking the PM to prolong the period when applicants would be eligible for feed-in tariffs until April 2012. She has also requested the cut to the tariffs to be calculated in accordance with the costs of installing the panels, and that subsidies are higher for schemes that are greener.
