May 10 (SeeNews) - US firms Pratt Industries and EnterSolar on Thursday officially inaugurated a 1.4-MW rooftop solar plant in New York City.

The photovoltaic (PV) facility is located at packaging firm Pratt Industries’ box plant in Staten Island, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) said in a statement. The installation uses over 5,400 solar panels capable of powering 232 average-sized households. It is expected to generate about 45% of the box plant’s power needs.

The project was developed by EnterSolar, while NYSERDA provided nearly USD 1.6 million (EUR 1.4m) in support as part of the USD-1-billion NY-Sun incentive programme for backing solar development.

New York seeks to meet 50% of its electricity needs with renewable resources by 2030.
