November 30 (Renewables Now) - The Portuguese government announced on Wednesday that it will create a lottery system for the licensing of renewable energy projects without subsidised tariffs, especially solar.
The new system, which is part of the State Budget for 2018, was developed in response to strong interest form investors. The number of licensing applications currently exceeds the available capacity on the country's distribution and transmission networks in certain regions, the government said.
Portugal has 2,200 MW of solar projects and 80 MW of wind applications under evaluation, the government noted.
This new system will change the regime of electricity generation, transportation, distribution and commercialisation activities, ensuring the transparency of the licensing process. Projects that do not secure licenses through the lottery may receive the green light when the grid can accept more capacity.
