US fuel cell systems provider Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) and Brookfield Renewable Partners LP (NYSE:BEP), or BEP, intend to build a green hydrogen production plant in Pennsylvania that runs fully on hydropower.
The new facility is planned to be constructed in Lancaster County, where it will utilise 100% renewable power supplied by Brookfield Renewable’s Holtwood hydroelectric plant. It will be able to produce about 15 tonnes of liquid hydrogen per day.
Construction work is seen to start in the first quarter of 2022 and be completed near the end of that year.
Plug Power said that this project will create more than 25 jobs and support the decarbonisation of the broader transportation and logistics industries in the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic. The company has set a goal for itself to establish the first North American green hydrogen network and to produce more than 500 tonnes per day by 2025.
