Plan for 8 GW of special wind, PV tenders greenlit by German cabinet

November 7 (Renewables Now) - The Federal Cabinet in Germany on Monday passed a bill, containing the plan for additional tenders for 8 GW of onshore wind and solar power between 2019 and 2021.

Last week it was announced that there will be tenders for 1 GW wind and 1 GW solar in 2019, followed by 1.4 GW for each technology in 2020, and then 1.6 GW for each in 2021. Germany will also hold technology-neutral tenders in which it will test new pricing mechanisms and tendering procedures. These are to award 250 MW in 2019, 400 MW in 2020, and then 500 MW in 2021.

In a summary of Monday’s decision, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy said there will be a reduction of feed-in tariffs (FiT) for solar systems in the 40 kW-750 kW category, to avoid over-subsidisation as the cost of photovoltaic (PV) equipment continues to fall. Meanwhile, measures will be taken to increase the acceptance of onshore wind turbines by cutting light pollution at night -- in place of flashing lights, the concept of needs-based lighting will be introduced so that turbines would light up only when an aircraft is approaching. The cabinet will also speed up the expansion of the German grid, and provide support for the combined heat and power (CHP) sector.

“We are setting the central course for a safer and more affordable energy transition,” said German energy minister Peter Altmaier, noting that affordable and secure energy supply is needed to ensure broad public support for the energy transition.
