(ADPnews) - Nov 30, 2010 - Revenues from renewable distributed energy generation (RDEG) systems worldwide will more than triple to USD 154.7 billion (EUR 118.7bn) by 2015, Pike Research projected in a recent study.
In 2009, the market, including both distributed solar photovoltaics (PV) and small-scale wind power, stood at USD 50.8 billion. The research firm expects that installed RDEG capacity will reach 15.1 GW in 2015, compared to 5.9 GW as of the end of 2009, as this type of power generation is becoming more and more popular as an alternative to centralised electricity generation.
According to senior analyst Peter Asmus, RDEG's share in the worldwide power generation capacity will significantly exceed the 0.2% it stands at currently. "The transition to a more distributed system is no small matter, and it requires the evolution of policies, technologies and business models," Asmus added.
At present, Europe and the US are the leaders in terms of installed RDEG, but China and India also hold huge potential. Between 2010 and 2015, Europe will remain the biggest RDEG market, Pike Research forecasts, but the largest market growth will happen in China, where green energy costs are close to those of conventional power.
