Oct 10, 2011 - US poultry producer Perdue Inc, solar system installer Standard Solar Inc (NASDAQ:CSIQ) and electricity supplier Washington Gas Energy Service (WGES) last week announced the opening of a solar power system in the US state of Maryland.
The system includes 5,040 solar panels owned by WGES and installed by Standard Solar on six-acre (2.4 ha) site owned by Perdue in Salisbury. Perdue will buy electricity produced by the panels at guaranteed prices to power its nearby corporate headquarters.
The system is the final phase of a project to install up to 12,000 solar panels at two Perdue properties. The first phase of the project includes a 6,720-panel solar system completed in August in the US state of Delaware. It will deliver power to Perdue's adjacent feed mill and grain facility.
The two solar systems will produce a total 3,700 MWh of electricity a year, enough to supply 340 households. At peak production, the panels will produce enough electricity to meet 90% of the energy demand at each Perdue facility.
According to Perdue's vice president of environmental sustainability, Steve Schwalb, the solar systems will produce enough electricity to save 3,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.
