Patagonian winds collapse wind turbine in Argentina - report

Strong Patagonian winds have knocked down a wind farm turbine located in the area of the coastal city of Comodoro Rivadavia, southern Argentina, local news outlet El Chubut reported on Wednesday.

The incident, in which no one was injured, occurred on Tuesday morning.

Winds that buffeted almost the entire Patagonian province of Chubut first bent the turbine tower of some 50 metres before bringing it to the ground, causing significant damage to the blades and the nacelle, according to the report.

Information on the wind farm name or its owner was not released.

According to El Chubut, wind gusts of up to 90 km/h (55.9 mph) were forecast for the Comodora Rivadavia area for Wednesday.

A similar incident occurred in October 2018 when strong winds that hit the south of the province brought down a tower of an inactive turbine, the report states.
