Panda Green Energy Group Ltd (HKG:0686) said on Thursday it has connected to the grid its first panda-shaped solar power plant as part of a campaign with the United Nations unveiled last year.
The Chinese company built the particular 50-MW solar park in Datong County, Shanxi Province. It is expected to generate such volume of renewable power equivalent to the reduction of about 60,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions a year.
The firm, then known as United PV, entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UN at the start of September 2016. The MoU calls for the construction of 50-MW solar power stations shaped in the form of pandas around the world in a bid to promote the sustainable development concept among young people.
Other projects under the campaign will be developed in selected areas around the world with G20 members.
