The New South Wales government has awarded development consent to an up to 80-MWp solar project with an integrated battery storage component.
The positive decision for the so-called Tamworth Solar Farm was issued by the state’s department of planning, industry and the environment on Monday. The permit contains conditions related to maintaining the agricultural land capability of the site, land restoration and infrastructure decommissioning. The planning authority concluded that the project, classified as a state significant development, will have a range of benefits for the region, including job creation and a capital investment of around AUD 104 million (USD 76.8m/EUR 63.7m).
Australia’s Oriens Energy, through the Tamworth Solar Farm Pty Ltd project vehicle, is developing the scheme.
The photovoltaic (PV) park will be installed on agricultural land near Tamworth city, in the northeastern part of the state, and will be equipped with around 210,000 solar panels. According to the project’s website, it will be capable of producing enough electricity for about 30,000 homes, once operational. The plant will be coupled with a 19 MW/19 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system.
