NRG cuts ribbon on 32 MW of community solar in Minnesota

May 19 (Renewables Now) - US power company NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) this week announced the completion of its initial community solar projects in Minnesota, a set of seven installations totalling 32 MW.

The solar sites are between 3 MW and 5 MW in size and the company says it has more in various stages of development and construction. They add to its community solar projects already in operation in Massachusetts and in development in New York.

The newly completed projects in Minnesota will serve more than 1,000 residents and more than a dozen large businesses, including stores of retailer Macy's and sites of US Bank, under 25-year solar subscription agreements. The solar power goes to the grid and the customers get a bill credit from their utility, which in this case is Xcel Energy Inc (NYSE:XEL). In this way they go solar without having to install solar panels on their property.
