May 13 (Renewables Now) - SolarPower Europe announced on Tuesday the launch of a new platform that will facilitate connections between industry participants and financial investors with a focus on beefing up the continent's photovoltaic (PV) supply chain.

The Solar Manufacturing Accelerator will be open to all companies and organisations that seek to take part in the development of solar PV manufacturing projects. The goal is to speed up such developments in Europe.

“The ambition of the EU Green Deal building on PV as one of the strategic pillars needs to be translated into an Industrial Strategy for European solar manufacturing. For the revival of the PV manufacturing supply chain in Europe, it is important that the EU Commission and the member states support European companies with easier access to globally-competitive financing conditions, and through enabling the appropriate economic framework to run a successful operation,” said Christian Westermeier, chairman of SolarPower Europe’s Industrial Strategy Workstream, which will coordinate the new platform.

The announcement comes after an eight-nation group led by Lithuania urged the European Commission (EC) to take measures to boost the local production of components for wind and solar power generation and storage projects. Also, it follows a letter signed by 90 sector organisations that pushes for solar PV manufacturing and research and development (R&D) to be at the core of the Green Deal.
