Morocco's agency for solar agency MASEN will take over the policy implementation and coordination of renewable energy development in the country.
The agency has so far managed only developments in the solar power sector but will now "assure" the management of all renewable energy projects, including wind and hydro, the government said in a news release today.
While national electricity and water utility ONEE and MASEN will each keep their respective autonomy, both entities will have to work in symbiosis from now on, the government statement reads.
A Saturday meeting of the royal cabinet in Casablanca gathered high-ranking officials in the energy sector to break the news. Among the attendees were the head of government, Abdelilah Benkirane, the king's advisers, Fouad Ali El Himma and Yassir Znagui, the minister of economy and finance, Mohamed Boussaid, the energy minister, Abdelkader Aamara, the general manager of ONEE, Ali Fassi Fihri, the general manager of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), Amina Benkhadra, and of course the head of MASEN, Mustapha Bakkoury.
