Mitsubishi to supply 50-MW battery system to Kyushu Electric

Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Corp (TYO:6503) has received an order from Kyushu Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9508) to supply a 50-MW energy storage system for installation at a power plant in Fukuoka prefecture.

Consisting of sodium sulfur batteries manufactured by NGK Insulators Ltd, the system is expected to be deployed at the site by the end of March 2016, Mitsubishi Electric said in a press release on Monday.

Kyushu Electric needs to energy storage capacity to deal with the inflow of solar power to its electricity grids.

In the autumn of 2014, Kyushu Electric, Tohoku Electric, Hokkaido Electric and other utilities put grid connection applications on hold due to a boom of solar power project development. They had to assess how much more renewable energy they could add without disturbing the grid.
