Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp (TYO:8058) on Monday announced an off-site power purchase agreement (PPA) with Japanese convenience store operator Lawson Inc (TYO:2651) to power Lawson sites with 45 MW of new solar facilities.
Mitsubishi said it will contract West Holdings Corp (TYO:1407) to build the solar facilities and will supply their generation to Lawson. The solar arrays will power about 3,600 Lawson stores located in the Kanto-Koshin district and the prefectures of Gifu, Shizuoka, Aichi and Mie, starting in April 2022. The companies are looking to expand the renewable energy supply in the future to cover some 8,200 stores throughout Japan.
According to the announcement, the planned solar facilities will be one of the largest built under an off-site PPA in Japan.
The deal aligns with Lawson’s environmental vision, “Lawson Blue Challenge 2050!”, which includes targets of reducing per-store carbon dioxide (CO2) by 50% from 2013 levels by 2030 and by 100% by 2050.
