Masdar City completion delayed until 2020-2025

(ADPnews) - Oct 13, 2010 - Abu Dhabi's renewable energy project Masdar City is expected to complete by 2020-2025, instead of the initially announced 2016, after a project review, its developer Masdar announced on Sunday.

Masdar, the renewable energy unit of state-owned Mubadala Development, also delayed the completion of phase I of the project, designed to be the world's first 100% clean energy powered city, to 2015. It was previously expected to be ready in 2013.

Masdar City also revised its "on-site only" renewable energy sourcing and is now considering purchase of additional renewable energy from locations out of the city to meet rising demand over the project's lifetime.

Last but not least the review changed transportation plans at Masdar, allowing alternative electric vehicles in the city, while the Personal Rapid Transport system -- electrically-powered vehicles -- will be limited within the Masdar Institute facilities.
