A demonstration project, backed by Japan’s Marubeni Corp (TYO:8002), has been launched in Portugal to feed green hydrogen into the country's natural gas distribution network.
This is the first time green hydrogen is injected into the country's gas grid, Marubeni said on Friday.

The green hydrogen was produced by a local company using solar energy to power the electrolysis process.
The milestone was achieved by Floene Energias SA, a major gas distribution system operator in Portugal, in which the Japanese firm holds a 22.5% stake under a joint venture (JV) with compatriot Toho Gas (TYO:9533).
The green hydrogen was injected into the existing natural gas network through a newly-constructed hydrogen pipeline. Afterwards, it was delivered to customers at around 80 residential, commercial, and industrial locations.
As part of the demonstration project, Floene, which is Portugal's largest gas distribution system operator, aims to raise the injection ratio to up to 20% within two years.
Under the National Hydrogen Strategy, the Portuguese government plans to achieve a 10% to 15% injection ratio by 2030.
