The market for organic photovoltaics (OPV) used for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), solar chargers and off-grid generation will top USD 355 million (EUR 315m) by 2021, N-tech Research forecasts in a report released Wednesday.
By 2025, the market is projected to increase to more than USD 580 million.
According to the analyst firm, the long-term business prospect for OPV still looks good as conversion efficiencies and lifetimes continue to improve and are getting good enough for applications like BIPV.
While OPV is currently seen mainly in low-performance applications like solar charging and off-grid use, N-tech thinks that BIPV will soon become a larger and more lucrative market for the technology.
The low-performance segment is expected to reach revenues of only USD 60 million or so in 2021. Revenues from OPV-enabled BIPV, however, are seen reaching around USD 290 million by that year. N-tech says that for this to happen, OPV firms should improve considerably on today's lifetimes and notes that considerable progress is being made in this area, with at least one OPV firm expecting to offer 10-year lifetimes for its OPV panels in a couple of years.
