Lightsource BP unveils 375-MW solar PPA with Amazon

Lightsource BP announced on Tuesday that it will be supplying power to Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) from a 375-MW DC solar project it is developing in Ohio.

The terms of the power purchase agreement (PPA) were not provided.

Lightsource BP, which is backed by oil-and-gas major BP Plc (LON:BP), will cover its commitment under the deal with electricity from a photovoltaic (PV) farm it will build in Ohio’s Auglaize and Allen Counties. The plant will have an annual output of close to 600,000 MWh, or enough to cover the power consumption of about 55,000 homes. The electricity will be used for Amazon’s local operations.

The construction of the PV farm will take 18 months, the developer estimates.

The PPA was struck in line with Amazon’s goal to use 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years earlier than initially planned, and become net-zero carbon by 2040. It is part of a larger bundle of contracts that the US e-commerce giant unveiled this week for wind and solar projects totalling roughly 1.4 GW, to be installed in Europe, the US and Canada.
