Lightsource BP signs PPAs for 25 MW of solar power in US

Utility-scale solar developer Lightsource BP announced on Wednesday that it has signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) totalling 25 MW with utilities that serve clients in California and New Mexico.

The two utility partners are California’s Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) and Continental Divide Electric Cooperative (CDEC), a member-owned distribution cooperative in New Mexico. The contracts for the provision of locally-generated PV power have a term of over 20 years.

Under one of the signed deals, the roughly 16-MW DC Wildflower Solar I plant will be built and located within SMUD’s territory to support its SolarShares community solar programme. SMUD and Lightsource BP are currently exploring the possibility of incorporating energy storage into the PV system.

Another plant will be developed and constructed by Lightsource BP on CDEC-owned territory in New Mexico. The cooperative will supply the generated electricity to its members via its own distribution system.

“The United States is an important market for renewables and for Lightsource BP, and this announcement demonstrates the real momentum we are building across the country,” said David Windle, BP head of solar energy.
