UK-based solar and smart energy solutions firm Lightsource BP today said it has acquired Internet of Things (IoT) specialist Ubiworx Systems of Ireland.
The companies have already worked together for two years and Ubiworx’s platform is now one of the core technologies deployed by Lightsource Labs, the in-house innovation arm of the solar company. The acquisition will support a plan for the global launch of Lightsource BP’s smart-home solution.
“Through our acquisition of Ubiworx, we aim to create more connected, intelligent, efficient and sustainable energy systems that will turn ordinary homes into ‘self-learning smart homes’, actively encouraging communities to live more sustainably,” said Kareen Boutonnat, COO of Lightsource BP, which was formed last year after UK oil and gas giant BP Plc (LON:BP) acquired a 43% stake in Lightsource Renewable Energy Investments Ltd.
Boutonnat further said the “power of the home” will play a key role in shaping the new energy future, where the energy market goes beyond just monitoring and controlling consumption. The increase in EV adoption, for example, is expected to change the way household energy is used and stored. The smart-home programme by the firm aims to give energy control back to the consumer.
Ubiworx, a subsidiary of embedded software engineering specialist Emutex, brings to Lightsource BP machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, small footprint embedded software and smart control systems.
