South Korean lithium-ion battery maker LG Chem Ltd (KRX:051915), part of LG Corp (KRX:003550), has commissioned a 1-MW/2-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at a solar park in the southeastern parts of the US.
The BESS was deployed for local electricity producer Southern Co (NYSE:SO) and the Electric Power Research Institute Inc (EPRI). It is located at a photovoltaic (PV) park in Cedartown, Georgia.
“Energy storage is a technology that can enhance grid reliability and make it easier to integrate renewable energy sources,” EPRI senior programme manager, Haresh Kamath, noted.
Southern Co unit Georgia Power will use the system to analyse the technology’s ability to improve the integration of solar power in the local grid. It will also evaluate the impacts of the BESS in connection with multiple applications, including load smoothing, peak shaving and voltage support while onboarding and discharging electricity from the solar farm.
After supplying, installing and commissioning the battery, LG Chem will provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for it, as well. Swiss-Swedish industrial group ABB (VTX:ABBN) was the one to deliver the enclosure and power conversion equipment for the system.
