Itek to open solar panel factory in Minnesota in early 2015 - report
Nov 5, 2014 - US solar equipment maker Itek Energy plans to start operations at a new panel factory in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, early next year, the Star Tribune said Tuesday.
The plant, which will be located in the southern parts of the city, is expected to start manufacturing in January or February. The facility is privately financed, Itek co-founder Kelly Samson said in an interview with the newspaper, without disclosing the total amount of the investment.
Itek intends to make solar modules for the residential and small-business markets in the region, according to Samson. Following the inauguration of the plant, the company will become the third solar product manufacturer in the city, following Silicon Energy and TenKsolar.
With its new factory, Itek seeks to qualify for Minnesota's various solar incentives, available from local utilities such as Xcel Energy Inc (NYSE:XEL). A 2013 state law obliges these companies to source 1.5% of their power from solar systems by 2020.
