IRENA presents roadmap to achieve global renewables targets by 2030

Jan 14, 2013 - The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) unveiled on Sunday a new roadmap for the global development of renewable energy, calling for more efforts to achieve the clean power targets by 2030.

The REMAP 2030 initiative, which was unveiled at the IRENA assembly held in Abu Dhabi on January 13 and 14, is being discussed by representatives of over 150 countries.

IRENA’s data show that investment in renewable energy generation, grid infrastructure, sustainable biomass and the generation of heat through renewable sources needs to be considerably boosted in order to meet the targets by 2030. Renewable power generation worldwide will have to grow by over 150 GW per year in order to meet the goals, while growth was some 110 GW in 2011.

Adnan Amin, IRENA director general, said that REMAP 2030 provided clear evidence for the challenges the world faces in achieving its goal of doubling the share of renewable energy.

Still, Amin praised the latest decline in costs and the widespread of technology as well as the growing adoption of policies to stimulate renewable energy adoption.
